Understanding the Armor of God
Ephesians 6 describes spiritual armor every believer needs. But what does it mean to actually put on each piece? A practical guide to spiritual warfare.
Understanding the Armor of God
In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul describes the spiritual armor God provides for every believer. This isn't metaphorical decoration—it's essential equipment for the spiritual battle we face daily.
The Reality of Spiritual Warfare
Before discussing the armor, we must acknowledge the war. We have a real enemy who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). But take heart: "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4).
The Full Armor Explained
Belt of Truth (v. 14a)
Roman soldiers' belts held everything together and allowed freedom of movement.
Application: Living in truth—being honest, embracing God's truth, rejecting deception—holds your spiritual life together. Lies create vulnerability.
Breastplate of Righteousness (v. 14b)
The breastplate protected vital organs, especially the heart.
Application: Christ's righteousness (our position) and daily righteous living (our practice) protect our hearts from condemnation and accusation.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (v. 15)
Roman soldiers wore studded sandals for stability and mobility.
Application: The peace we have with God through the gospel gives us stable footing. We can advance confidently, sharing this peace with others.
Shield of Faith (v. 16)
The Roman shield could extinguish flaming arrows.
Application: Active trust in God's promises and character deflects the enemy's attacks of doubt, fear, and temptation.
Helmet of Salvation (v. 17a)
Helmets protected the head—the command center.
Application: Knowing you are saved protects your mind from the enemy's lies about your identity and security in Christ.
Sword of the Spirit (v. 17b)
The only offensive weapon listed—the Word of God.
Application: Scripture memorized and spoken has power to defeat the enemy, just as Jesus used it in His wilderness temptation.
Don't Forget Prayer (v. 18)
After listing the armor, Paul emphasizes prayer. Prayer isn't an additional piece—it's how we put on and use every piece.
Put on the full armor daily. The battle is real, but victory is certain for those who stand firm in Christ.
